The Arts

The arts have always been an important part of my life. For as long as I can remember, I've been playing music of some form or another. Writing has always been something I've enjoyed as far back as the 1st grade. I have also tried to stretch myself into other arts over the years. My dad used to be a professional photographer, and I've recently rekindled my interest in photography.

One of the most challenging and rewarding things I ever did was martial arts. The principles I learned while training have been invaluable to me and toughened me both mentally and physically. Although I quit due to lack of time shortly after earning my black belt in July 2004, the experiences were invaluable and I'd definitely do it again. Martial arts helped me build self-confidence and has, in a way, helped me deal with a harsh world more tactfully. I also don't feel quite as bad being in less-than-safe places alone, though wisdom usually keeps me away.

Given my love for music and my love for technical things, one might not be too surprised to learn that I do sound reinforcement on occasion. Several years ago, I had the opportunity to run a recording board at several steel guitar conventions. Later, I was asked to run sound for my church. Most recently, I've done sound for various productions at the Master's Academy of Fine Arts, breaking a 3-year hiatus. Most importantly, working in the booth is an opportunity to be part of a culture in which people aren't afraid to relax even in serious situations. It's also taught me a lot about multitasking too.
